I am in USA and used some of GPS system.
First, ask yourself the following questions:
1) What is your purpose to get a GPS and how often you will use it?
2) How much money you would like to spend?
Basically you get two options:
A) PDA+GPS:
Pro: You get PDA for something other than GPS. Being a student, you can use it as organizer to arrange your time.
Con: You have to buy a lot of accessories, such as GPS receiver (bulid-in or add-on), Car kit (holder, charger), software(or map). Not very easy if you compare to the GPS machine, you have to set it up before you go. If you are a person like to play around the set-up, you will enjoy it. If not, suggest you go to option B.
B) GPS stand alone.
Pro: Easy, just turn it on then everything should be ready. Ususally it is much faster and accurate than the PDA+GPS. If you buy a really good one, such as magellan RoadMate 700, all USA map is loaded, not need to download from a PC.
Con: Just GPS, maybe some database, that is it. Most likely only staty in the car because it does require power from the car (although you can buy power source to make it portable).
If you are a student and I assume you will stay school for most of time just use GPS for weekend or school break, then chose A. Forget about PaPaGo. Despite how much I would like to support Taiwanese develper, their performance and map information was lousy. There are 2 major map database used by major map software. The best one, my opinion, is NaviTech that used by Yahoo map, mapquest, MicoSoft and major car navigation system. The TomTom, I heard is not really accurate in USA, but is very good in Europe. Mapolilis is very good in USA but not very well accepted in Europe.
Just a suggestion, if you are really come to USA for study, buy a PDA here. First, you can ensure the system is compatiable with the program you purchase here. Second, it will help you to learn English. As for GPS receiver, BT is useful. You probably need CF to put your map on. If you can get better price in Taiwan, then grab it.

So far NavTeq (used by Microsoft) is considered better than TeleAtlas (used by TomTom). I have Microsoft Streets & Trips (Pocket Street) 2005 and TomTom both loaded on my iPaq for this reason.
For all the navigation software I have used: TomTom 2.24, Mapopolis 4.42, Deluo Routis 1.1, Destinator 3 and Ostia 6, they are all way better than acceptable in the US. (MS S&T is not a navigator, just maps) Here are some differences regarding their features that I know of:
3D: TomTom, Routis, Destinator
Customizable maps: Routis, Ostia (sort of), TomTom 2004 (sort of)
PC: Routis
Accuracy: depends on where you are
Cost: Ostia is free with Pharos GPS hardware, Mapopolis is subscription based (application is free, you just pay for the maps), the rest varies.
BTW, TomTom 2004 is "available soon" only.
In addition, currently I am seriously considering a Magellen handheld (Sportrak or something like that). It has a built-in electronic compass. Very convenient for a guy like me who is notoriously orientationless when in a big parking lot where no navigators can route due to the lack of detail information. But that's not the point for the message. The bottom line is, you will be happy with the first one you use anyway. At least I did. And remember, “If You Are Heading In The Wrong Direction, GOD Allows U-Turn.”

我會推薦買 destinator 3 或是 tomtom 2004... 這兩個都是非常好用的導航軟體
但是我個人是覺得說 如果您不用 3D 地圖的話 那我會推薦 destinator 3
但是如果您要 3d 地圖的話 我會推薦買 tomtom.... 因為我個人是覺得說 tomtom 算是目
前 3 D 地圖裡做的最好的 ( 以北美的導航軟體來說 )
以這兩個導航軟體 (我兩個都用過 但是 tomtom 不是 2004 的) 我會比較喜歡
destinator 3 因為這個軟體還沒有發現過打入地址找不到的情況 但是 tomtom 卻有過
我是住在南加的所以大部分的時間都是在南加使用...
如果說要用 papago 的話 我是強烈的建議您千萬不要買 因為您是在美國長期居住
所以還是買當地的軟體會比較好一點...
對了 我是覺得啦 如果你主要的作用是 GPS 的話 我也會建議你買 mio168
因為它算是真的滿方便的說.... 而且也不貴
或是 garmin 3600 也很不錯 它也是內建 GPS 的... 但是它是用 palm 系統的
當然如果你想要有 wifi 與 bluetooth 我會真的覺得 X50 算是真的超讚的
但是我想現在美國的學校 (大學) 應該到處都是電腦了吧 有無線上網的地方
也都一定會有電腦給你使用 所以何必要傷害自己的眼睛呢.... 我個人是覺得內建
wifi 的好處只有收發 e-mail... 如果要瀏覽網頁的話 我真的不建議...

TomTom:
Pro: Fast, Best user interface, very easy to use and the map is very easy to read. Many things can config for advance user.
Con: No street name is display on navigation mode. Voice prompt message is not very helpful. (eg. "exit to the right in XXX feet" won't help much for freeway intersection)
The routing had serious problem sometime. (Try San Jose Airport to Los Angele make U drive 480 miles instead of 400 mile !!!! )
Routis:
Pro: Route are more reliable, street name are printed on the map in navigation mode. Very helpful voice prompt for freeway exit (eg: "In 200 feet, exit to freeway 101 South")
Con: Relatively slow. Cannot config hard button. Map is not as pretty as Tomtom.
UI is harder to use and understand.
Destinator: almost everything is in the middle of above 2.
For me, I use Routis primary since the most important things for car navigation are RELIABLE route and good VOICE PROMPT. But sometime, I just open both (w/ GPS GATE to enable 2 apps sharing one GPS) and switch back & forward.
