Big, robust, and fast, the Goodyear F2G was often referred to as the "Super Corsair" for good reason. Designed and produced by Goodyear rather than Vought, the F2G design mated the Corsair airframe to Pratt & Whitney's huge R-4360 engine rated at 3,000 horsepower. Other changes were a bubble canopy and a taller vertical stabilizer with auxiliary rudder to compensate for the engine's extra torque. Some 418 F2Gs were ordered, but only five F2G-1s and five folding-wing "dash twos" were manufactured.

Ironically, the F2G Corsair made its name in the peacetime world of air racing. Navy pilot Cook Cleland obtained four surplus F2Gs and substantially modified one, clipping six feet off the wingspan. He won the 1947 Thompson Trophy race at 396 mph while two years later the Super Corsairs scored a clean sweep with Cleland, Ron Puckett, and Ben McKillen taking the top three spots. In ten starts over three years the F2Gs scored two wins, two seconds, and a third-place finish.

The Museum's F2G-1 Corsair, Navy Bureau of Aeronautics number 88454, was delivered in 1945. As the first production F2G-1, it spent most of its career at the Navy Air Test Center at Patuxent River, it then went into storage at Norfolk, Virginia, the Corsair with only 246 hours flight time.

In the early 1960s Navy title passed to the Marine Corps Museum at Quantico, Virginia. Following display aboard the aircraft carrier Intrepid during New York's bicentennial observance in 1976, the F2G was barged back to Norfolk. Subsequently, the museum traded the Corsair and a Douglas Skyraider to Doug Champlin in exchange for a Dauntless dive bomber. Champlin kept the Corsair at Enid, Oklahoma, until he opened his museum in Mesa, Arizona, in 1981, when former Thompson Trophy racer Ron Puckett flew the F2G to Falcon Field. Subsequently the rare Corsair came to Seattle with the rest of the Champlin collection in 2003.

Bad outlook for The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (NYSE: GT)




The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (NYSE: GT, GT message board) announced the company's performance for the 4th quarter of 2008 was more seriously affected by the market crash than analysts thought. The company stated they had to cut production amounts due to weak demand which conclusively led to a decrease in sales.

"It is widely known that the economic slowdown is having a considerable impact on consumer demand and industry volume," said Darren R. Wells, executive vice president and CFO. "Fourth quarter industry volumes were well below expected levels, prompting a significant increase to our production cuts that now extend across all business units."



According to the company's estimations that were announced, industry volumes for consumer replacement shipments in North America decreased around 3.5% over the 2008. Other markets, like consumer original equipment, commercial tire and original equipment shipments decreased up to 20 percent.
A very similar outlook is given for European markets as well. Along with an increase of around 13% in raw material costs, the situation has changed significantly from that which was anticipated a year ago.

The company might announce a loss for the fourth quarter if sales have decreased as much as expected. Their cash position, as revealed in their third quarter filing, is enough to support small losses, so the situation isn't likely to get very bad too soon. Also, their stock has already taken a beating, so bad performance isn't likely to have an extended adverse effect on it either. More insight on the company's future performance should be attained when the real numbers are posted.

The relatively new Goodyear Race attracted 39 entries this year, qualifying
trials reduced this number to 21 starters. Four elimination heats and two
semi-finals reduced the field to the 8 best in the Labor Day final race. The
new 2 mile course would be on the airfield directly in front of the grandstand
in full view of the crowd. Pylons would be mounted on trucks and driven into
place at the time of the race. Performance of the best the planes was so
closely matched that the only big difference was there rate on take off.
Old timers who gave up the high speed racers did very well, racers built by
Tony LeVier, Steve Wittman and Art Chester monopolized six of the seven
top money positions.

Back in the day, there were only a handful of tire manufacturers on the block. If you were a red-blooded American with anything that put power to the pavement, you likely ran the same thing the boys at NASCAR ran—something with a winged foot on the sidewall. These days there are more tire brands on the market than doughnut varieties in the back of a county mounty’s cruiser, forcing companies like Goodyear to up their game to stay competitive. How have they done that? By putting the full brunt of their corporate presence behind research and development of tire technology, they’ve managed to produce rubber that provides performance head and shoulders above the new comers for a fraction of the coin. The newest example is the Eagle GT, an all-season performance tire. Before you go wincing away at the thought of an M+S label on your sidewall, read on for our first impressions. You just might end up as surprised as we were.



Goodyear was kind enough to put us behind the wheel of three BMW 328i’s for purpose of comparison. The first rocked Kumho’s Ecsta ASX (white), the second wore the previous generation of the Eagle GT (black) and the last was shod in the newest incarnation of the tire (red). I currently run Kumho AST’s on my daily driver/track flogger, so I was interested to see how the ASX’s held up against the Goodyears. The test track consisted of an autocross course with a series of slaloms, chicanes and sweepers, the latter of which was flooded with a light covering of water courtesy of the test tracks irrigation system (damn cool).

While our hosts recommended we leave the traction control in place during our jaunt, we figured relying on electronic nannyism on any level would dilute discoveries about each tire’s limits capabilities. Push the button, traction control off. Hands down, the Kumho’s were the most fun. In someone else’s car. On a track with at least 100 ft of run off/spin off room. With a helmet on. Even with the near-anemic straight six under the hood of the Bimmer, the tires gave up the ghost almost on demand, lending themselves to ass-out hooning on dry portions of the tarmac. On the wet, the car might as well have been wearing ice skates. Regaining control and getting the car pointed in the right direction required multiple steering, throttle and brake inputs, giving me the work out I needed to work off the burger I had on the way to the track.



Similarly, the previous generation GT’s were easy to break loose in the wet. They allowed us to carry a little more speed through the course, keeping the rear in check through most of the slalom/sweeper segments, but in general, they were on par with their Kumho competition. With any abrupt throttle or braking, wallowing slides at speed were all but inevitable.

The final ride carried the company’s newest roller. The tire utilizes a number of tricks to help keep the car planted on the pavement. Using an asymmetric tread pattern, the Eagle GT manages to combine both all-season tread blocks to handle wet and snowy conditions and a performance tread pattern with large blocks of rubber for better grip in the dry. The two are separated by uninterrupted groves that wrap around the whole tire to evacuate water as quick as possible. The coolest part of the tire is Goodyear’s Tredlock, which uses interlocking teeth between blocks of rubber. The effect is an added channel for water to escape through in a straight line and a locked, larger block of grippy goodness under lateral load (cornering).



Yeah, yeah, you can read a press release. How does it handle? The difference between the newest GT and the other two cars was impressive. The newest GT shod Bimmer stubbornly refused to give up its grip on the tarmac in the wet or dry. When it did, getting the car back under control was as simple as letting off of the throttle enough to lose some speed. The tires did the rest. For folks like me who have to deal with a rainy, slushy Virginia winter, these are a great weapon against slick conditions. They could also be a decent alternative to pricey rain tires on track days. Still, with the all-season segment of the tire nestled where high-camber tires suffer the worst abuse, we wonder how well the tire would hold up over the long haul. No worries, we’re working on a long-term test. Stay tuned.

The Goodyear Welted

The Goodyear Welted was invented in United States at the end of the XIXth century by Charles Goodyear Junior, son of Charles Goodyear, the inventor of the vulcanization. The Goodyear welted, except with its origins, is completely different of the vulcanization.

At the end of the XIXth century, the greatest names of the fine shoes for men industry, in wide majority English and French shoes maker fascinated by the qualities and the fame of this new way of construction, came to America to learn and acquire with the American master bookmakers the methods of this revolutionary construction.

To sum up, the sewing machine called “Goodyear” uses the same technology than the one used by the craftsmen of the hand made shoes industry. It is just adapted to the industrial fabrication of shoes by mechanizing several steps of sewing.

For a smart man, oxford shoes, derby shoes or luxury boots for men can only be crafted with the Goodyear construction.

About the technology?
A Goodyear welted shoe is made with two stitchings:
- The first one called “Goodyear” is realised with the Goodyear machine. It joins the welt, the upper and the insole.
- The second one is made with a “Little Points” machine. This stitching links the sole with the welt.

With this construction, as soon as the outsole is timeworn, it is really easy to remove it and make a new “little points” stitching without any damage for the shoe and the rest of the Goodyear construction.

This construction is very long-lasting. Other benefit: the foot is lying on a leather insole which is on a thickness of natural cork. The natural cork has the particularity to take bit by bit the shape of the foot. As a result, you have the feeling that your shoe is made-to-measure and you can not give up it.

The Goodyear construction has also another advantage: its keeping and its special design. Due to its construction, a Goodyear welted shoe is higher than a classical one and its lower part near the welt goes lightly inside. Those elements give to Goodyear shoes for men a distinguished and esthetical line. An uninitiated person will not notice these details, he only sees a fine and formal shoes that perfectly goes through the time.

Today, all the great names of the luxury industry: Paraboot, Church, Edward Green, Crocket and Jones… still respect this tradition of Goodyear Construction. The Goodyear welted is the must of the smart shoes for men. In current language, Goodyear welted is synonymous of luxury English shoes for men.

  2005年4月1日,美國固特異輪胎橡膠有限公司將其亞太地區總部由美國遷至中國上海。這是固特異加強中國及周邊地區業務發展的重要舉措,同時宣布公司新任命的固特異亞太和中國區強大領導陣容,並將積極邁向宏偉的增長目標以及應對『一零年增長到10%』的挑戰,力求在2010年使中國的采購份額達到10%並增加在中國的零售業務。

  2008年1月,固特異飛艇在深圳啟動『2008安全行天下』活動號召百萬車主共倡行車安全;同時,固特異聯合中國汽車工程學會在全國展開輪胎免費安全檢測,預計受檢轎車將超過10萬輛。

  2007年11月,固特異在亞洲同步發布市場期待已久的固特異牧馬人全天候城市越野胎(Wrangler HP AW)。這款高性能越野輪胎為豪華SUV車主量身打造,適合行駛於各種城市路面。

  2007年9月,固特異發布Eagle Vector 2+全天候轎車輪胎,確保輪胎自如應對各種道路及氣候狀況,延長15%行駛裡程。

  2007年6月,固特異缺氣保用(RunOnFlat)輪胎,即爆胎後仍能安全行駛的輪胎產品在中國上市,可配備寶馬3系、寶馬5系和新Mini Cooper。

  2007年3月,固特異發起『麗人安全行』活動,聯合女性駕駛員倡導駕駛安全。

  2006年10月,固特異推出全新規格的F1輪胎,將F1輪胎產品線向小規格延伸。

  2006年9月,固特異『品牌大使』——固特異『領航者』號飛艇首飛中國,在廣州起航。

  2005年12月,固特異在廣東珠海發布Excellence三能輪胎,並同時推出『三重』質保承諾。

  2005年10月,固特異輪胎橡膠公司亞太區總部正式落戶上海。它同時也是固特異中國區團隊的工作場所。通過更有效的資源利用、不斷提高的生產力,以及更加熟練的業務運作,亞太區總部將眾多的業務機構聯合起來,並且使客戶服務質量得到不斷的改善和提高。

  2005年7月6日,固特異(中國)在上海成立首家固特異授權服務中心,並且宣布到2005年底建立300家授權服務中心。

  2005年4月1日,固特異將亞太區總部從美國俄亥俄州阿克隆市遷到中國上海,同時宣布到2010年,使固特異在中國的采購份額佔其全球采購份額的比例從現在的1%增加到10%。

  2001年,固特異將世界上第一款玉米混合物輪胎介紹到中國,這款固特異GT3輪胎采用了BioTRED輪胎配方----使用玉米提取物作為輪胎填充物。

  1994年9月,固特異成為西方第一個在中國投資建廠的輪胎制造公司,成立大連固特異輪胎有限公司。

Audi Allroad Quattro可以說是集合跑房車、旅行車、SUV越野車能力於一身的勁車,過去也曾引進國內,但在換了總代理以後,這部2004年式、近300萬元新車的引進還是頭一遭。關於這部車,我的形容是「貴、趣、棒」。
奧迪Allroad嚴格來說,並非真正的SUV,而是一款類SUV、略能通過越野地形的過渡車型(Corss Over)。實際接觸、操駕這部車,我的感覺內裝是高級豪華房車的格局,而奔跑在公路上,它的動力和操控表現,那絕對是舒適的跑房車。油門輕鬆就可上攻至220km/h,而這時候車身還是一派平穩,穩到讓人不可置信。

車高可作4段調整
大量的鋁合金外觀和行李空間讓它相似於旅行車,不過精壯的鈑件線條和防碰撞設計又像是SUV。不過它最有趣的還是在於4段調整的主動式氣壓懸吊,它能感應速度主動調整車身高度、而你也可以因應地形自行控制。這套系統能將底盤離地高作14.2~20.8公分變化。20.8公分的最高段必須以手動控鍵,一旦車速超過35km/h,車身就會降到第3段的19.2公分。車速超過80km/h,車身又再降低到第2段的16.7公分。當車速超過120km/h,車身則自動降低到第4段的14.2公分。

專用17吋雙片鍛造鋁圈,輪胎也是固特異為其專門設計。
