Ok, I will try again to explain how easy it is to update your KISS X4 to become 550D
Now follow me:
Body: --> Canon KISS X4 (同Canon EOS 550D) 英日介面
Firmware used to update: VERSION --> 1.0.8 ENGLISH VERSION
Firmware download link --> http://www.canon.com.tw/download/DownloadsDriver.asp?act=Search_Agree&ClassID1=00000003&ClassID2=00000185&ClassID3=00000709&ClassID4=&Submit=%E5%90%8C%E6%84%8F
Method of updating used: update by inserting memory card with firmware file into Kiss X4 body. Follow the instruction on your camara screen and it will update automatically.
Step by step instruction: make sure your camara body has a fully charged battery first.
1. Go to Canon Taiwan 550D download page
2. Scroll to bottom and click on "連結"
3. Scroll to bottom and click on "I Agree"
4. Scroll to bottom and click "Firmware Update Version 1.0.8 (for Windows extraction) "
--------->you see, this is Englsih version of 1.0.8 of EOS 550D
5. Save the file (name is e8kr7108.exe) to your desktop
6. double click on the e8kr7108.exe and it will extract itself to your desktop with a new name -> e8kr7108.fir and then we start to prepare the camara body for updating firmware.
7. insert any SD card to your KISS X4 body
8. formate the SD card with your KISS X4 body, when finished formatting, insert the SD card to your computer or card reader.
9. copy the e8kr7108.fir to your SD card in card reader (NOTE: put the file in root directory, do not put the file into any folders in SD card.) --> this is where my friend failed.
10. Take the SD card with e8kr7108.fir file out of your card reader
11. insert the SD card with e8kr7108.fir file into your KISS X4 camara body
12. Turn on the camara (in this case, your KISS X4) and push menu
13. look for where your menu shows your current firmware version (the camara is not around me now, sorry)
14. As far as I remember, there will be on screen instruction of how to update the firmware for you.
15. navigate through the menu instruction and click on "yes"
16. wait patiently, it takes less than 3 minutes to update I remember.
17. Scream and say "yes" to yourself, you have just completed updating your KISS X4 into Canon 550D.
18. look up the language option in your camara menu and you will see "Traditional Chinese" option.
19. Now, you have a KISS X4 body with Canon 550d firmware plus traditional chinese menu.
The easiest way to update your KISS X4 body to become Canon 550D:
Come to see me, I live in Taichung and I can help you with that. Note: A cup of 7-11 coffee for me is good enough. hahaha.
Updating Camara body firmware experience:
-my Canon 550D -> successful
-my Samsung EX1 -> successful 3 times already, hahaha
-2 of my friend's Canon 450D -> successful
-my friend's Canon 5DII -> successful
-my friend's Canon 500D -> successful
Anyway, it is not hard and Canon does a great job on making updating camara firmware easy.

Humn... interesting thing happened early this morning. I was helping my friend to update his KissX4 with Taiwanese firmware released from Taiwan Canon and guess what? It no longer has Traditional Chinese support option available to users.....
Does anyone know if there is any difference in the mainboards of 550D and in the main board of KissX4?
So far, I have no problem updating firmware on 450D or KissX2 and we do have Traditioanl Chinese support for them.
By the way, after updating to the latest firmware released from Canon Taiwan, I do see nice improvement from consistant tone of pictures. Nice update and good job for Canon.
