I strongly believe you have bought a brand new bad copy of EF50mmF1.8 for your camara. EF50mF1.8 is my first lens besides my kit 18-55mmIS. Why don't you borrow another EF50mmF1.8 from your friend and test it on your camara body then check the difference. If there is visible difference between your EF50mmF1.8 and your friend's EF50mmF1.8 then you might be able to ask the retailer to replace a new lens for you.
I guess I am lucky, my EF50mmF1.8 is excellent in terms of image quality and image resolution. Other than no so fast focus speed, I am very very pleased with my EF50mmF1.8 on my 550D.

左邊是Canon ，右邊 SIGMA
光圈值都設在F2.8時，至少我看起來還是Canon比較利~
(可以自己試試在不同焦段，和光圈值得比較)
