HDR Tip for K10D, K20D, K-7 & K-5:

HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography involves combining a series of photos of the same scene taken at different exposure levels. Since the K10D, several PENTAX DSLRs have included specific features which make the auto bracketing function particularly well-suited for HDR photography.

First, the PENTAX K10D, K20D, K-7 and K-5 allow precise control of the “step interval” (exposure difference) between individual shots in the auto bracketed sequence. This step interval can be specified in either ½ EV or ⅓ EV increments (a difference of 1 EV is an exposure difference of 1 stop). A step interval of up to 2 stops between exposures can be specified in an auto bracketed sequence.

Next, these particular PENTAX DSLRs offer a choice of shooting either 3 or 5 frames in a single bracketed sequence. The ability to specify up to 5 frames allows the camera to capture a very wide total exposure range between the lightest and darkest shots in the sequence.

Finally, the PENTAX K20D, K-7 and K-5 all offer “One-Push Bracketing”. This feature lets the auto bracketing sequence be triggered by a single press of the shutter release or button on the remote control or cable switch. One-Push Bracketing is enabled in the camera’s Custom Setting menu.

Note: The PENTAX K-r and K-x offer exposure bracketing of 3 frames in a sequence and selectable exposure steps of up to 3 EV.
