1.Yes, the Lifepo4 battery is // w NiMH battery. Since the two different chemistry including enegy density & capacity, internal resistance and temperature variation between them is one of the major problems to PHEV modification. In general there are 2 ways to the connections: converter type( low voltage system) or contactor type (high voltage system)
2.The converter type can totally avoid the high spike regeneration current to the Lifepo4. The contactor type can be protected by setting of BMSplus CCL such as 120A to A123 Lithium battery. In fact, during the sudden braking in high speed driving, the regenerative current may up to 100A for a few seconds in my prius. It's ok & under the spec. of A123 data sheet.
