此次全家的單車旅行所要做的功課遠比想像複雜。大公主能自行騎乘，雖然事前河濱道訓練單日40公里以上不成問題，但遇到需趕路或天候不佳的情況下，仍有可能需要用到拖車桿，不幸的是原本家中兩台鳥車的坐管徑超過拖車桿能配合的最大管徑，最後只能再添購一台大折，做為女王坐騎兼大公主的拖車頭，而另一台鳥車則是由我來拖著載小公主的拖車。在路線選擇上，考量到大公主的體力，加上整體行李的重量，有需要翻山越嶺的挑戰路線就先排除在外，幾經考量，最
選擇多瑙河作為本次單車旅行的主軸。
多瑙河全長約2800多公里，是歐洲第二長河，起源於德國南部黑森林，蜿蜒在中歐及東歐流經十個國家，最後注入黑海。多瑙河沿岸在史前時代即有人類活動，羅馬時代是帝國疆域的北界，而中世紀鄂圖曼土帝國崛起時，東西文化更是在此激盪。
歐洲單車風氣盛行，歐洲騎士協會(ECF)在歐洲規劃有多條長距離跨國單車道，而多瑙河沿線即歸入Eurovelo 6，只是6號單車道從法國西海岸橫貫法國，經瑞士進入德國後接上多瑙河一路到黑海，總長約3600多公里，不是我們這種親子單車隊能輕易征服，因此就選擇單車道建置最完善，且人文風景最佳的一段來騎。此次行程規劃從德奧邊界的帕紹(Passau)為起點，沿著多瑙河漫遊，最後抵達終點匈牙利布達佩斯，共經過德奧斯匈四個國家，及其中奧斯匈三國的首都。有些並未在多瑙河沿岸，但卻想造訪的城市就以火車為接駁，一方面可當作休息日，一方面也增加旅遊的廣度。
有了三年前德國羅曼蒂克大道的經驗，再度踏上歐洲大陸騎車，雖然對人文風景已有份熟悉感，但仍充滿期待。未知的冒險，不曉得下個轉角會遇到什麼樣的風景，旅行迷人之處就在此。而全家能24小時完全不分離的共度一個月，這輩子大概很難再有。
