Nic Pizzolatto stated that the second season will feature three new lead characters.[10] Pizzolatto also stated that the season will take place in California but will exclude Los Angeles in favor of a lesser-known region of the state.[11] While unconfirmed, the season is expected to contain eight episodes, with Pizzolatto again writing every episode; unlike the first season, each episode will be directed by a different director.[11] William Friedkin is in talks to direct some episodes.[12] The season is planned to start filming in September 2014, with a premiere date of summer 2015.
