94 points Wine & Spirits: "This is a dramatic young Rioja that expands as if to fill whatever time and space are provided. Its succulent fruit has a foresty edge of juniper and raspberry, while oak overlaps the tannin in layers of minerals and spice. The wine's ripeness shows in the supple texture and hint of sweetness from the alcohol. With a day of air, the savory, meaty notes balance that sweetness and suggest drinking it with jamón Ibérico de Jabugo. The best Ygay vintages age for decades, and all signs point to this being one of them. (Dec 2009)"
International Wine Cellar-92 points : "Medium red. Impressively complex bouquet of dried red fruits, tobacco, cedar and potpourri. A spicy, subtly sweet midweight, offering lively redcurrant and bitter cherry flavors and very soft tannins. The smoky finish features a strong echo of cedary spice. Incidentally, the 2004 Dalmau seems to be slowly eating up its strong oak component, as a bottle that I recently tasted is showing more vibrant red fruit than last year. (Jul/Aug 2009)"
Wine Advocate-92 points: "We began the tasting of red wines with the current release, the 2001 Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial, a wine the Marques calls 'the first vintage of the new era.' Purple in color with a ruby rim, it presents a slightly roasted character along with plum and liqueur-like aromas. On the palate balsamic and other savory notes make an appearance along with plenty of succulent black fruit. It has outstanding depth, concentration, and balance and should evolve for another 4-5 years. It is likely to have a 30 year lifespan. (Jun 2010)"
Winedoctor-18.5+/20 :Marqués de Murrieta Rioja Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 2001: Like the 1989, poured from a double magnum. Also like the 1989, another vintage that I have resting in my cellar. Quite a concentrated hue on inspection. There is a good richness evident on the nose, sweet with a slightly cooked fruit character, intense, full of appeal, with a complex gamey style behind it. To my mind the palate is still painfully primary, full of concentrated linear fruit, supple substance and a fine, linear definition to the structure. I think there is remarkable potential here, but it would be easy to dismiss its intense, high-toned, slightly stewed substance at this early juncture; but give it another 10-20 years and this could well be magnificent.
