作者：傳統及學術界均歸於 龍樹（Nāgārjuna）。學術上接受他為中觀（Madhyamaka）學派創立者與主要著作者。
成書時間：龍樹的生平與《中論》成書年代沒有精確的年日可考；學界普遍將龍樹活動時期約置於 公元2–3世紀間（大約公元150–250年），而《中論》則認為成書於此時段或稍後（具不確定性）。因此沒有可給出到「西元月日」那樣精確的創作日期。要表明：沒有可信的史料可提供精準的西元年月日；只有學術估期範圍與內外典籍證據的推論。
