國際紅十字運動會籍於1952年被中國大陸（中華人民共和國）改組後的中國紅十字會取代。
惟國際紅十字大會開會時仍會邀請中華民國紅十字會代表，直至中華民國政府於1971年退出聯合國為止。
1971年中華民國退出聯合國，因此自1971年德黑蘭第22屆國際紅十字大會後，國際紅十字與紅新月運動的中國代表權由中華人民共和國中國紅十字會取得，中華民國紅十字會不再參與該組織的正式活動。惟該會與紅十字國際委員會的非正式溝通管道迄今仍非常暢通，並經常與紅十字國際委員會合作辦理推廣紅十字知識與國際人道法的活動。
1999年，台灣發生921大地震後，紅十字會與紅新月會國際聯合會非正式的接受該會以台灣紅十字組織(Taiwan Red Cross Organization)的名義參與國際間的救援行動。
