Mechanical is mostly used to seal coolant in water pump. It’s made of two back-to-back ceramic disks. One is fixed and the other one is rotating. They reply on a minute amount of coolant between the two disks for lubrication so in normal operation, it’s possible to leak a little bit.
When it failed, larger amount of coolant leaked and exited the water pump housing through a weeping hole and left powdery residue when dried.
