I am a owner of the 120d in Sydney.
I have try out the 118i, 120i, 130i & 120d already.
I strongly recommand you to buy 120d if you are choosing between 120i and 120d.
120d are MUCH better in terms of power and fuel consumption.
If you research on the spec, 120d is much faster than the average 3 series.
In terms of the diesel sound, I guess if you are looking for a little performance car, you won't mind if you can hear the engine noise, right? Also the sound of the exhaust is sweet.
About the lower engine red line when comparing with the petrol engine. It is a normal misunderstanding about the diesel engine got lower rev. But if you actually drive the car, you will realise it is just different in the number, but it still drive the same way except it is more powerful than the same sized petrol engine.
