mRNA production has the potential to be much cheaper because it is essentially a reaction of nucleotide triphosphates, T7 polymerase, and DNA template.
There’s also so much more room for upscaling. I’m not privy to actual industrial production but I doubt they are currently using immobilization techniques for substrate reuse/recovery. Using thermostable T7 and either immobilized T7 or immobilized DNA template could potentially reduce costs even further, not to mention ease the purification process.
