what i think will be much easyer for u is to upgrade, get an wi-fi cable modem.
its cheap and u get Tch support it too. coz i work for bigpond wi-fi tech support, and i believe u will been to put in ur bigpond username and password in ur wi-fi router so that way it wont get cut off, the reason u need the connection manager is coz bigpond send out and singel and ur pc need to reply, and if u didnt put that in the router, it will cut u off. i think*not sure about the stander modem. i hope it helps.
