As if out of the blue, Sony Ericsson has put forward a press release, announcing that the joint venture would cease operation within four months. The reason for this delay is, as stated, the need to “reallocate and redistribute resources” between the two companies. What this probably means is that Sony and Ericsson are planning to actually take on the employees of Sony Ericsson rather than leaving thousands unemployed, as each company goes their own way. It has also been stated that they are starting talks regarding the ownership of jointly shared intellectual rights, mostly in the form of patents and trademarks.
Sony Ericsson CEO, Bert Nordberg, says: “We truly did believe in the vision that was Sony Ericsson, we had an ambition to rise to the top, but sadly, our way towards there has been hampered in numerous ways during the past few years, both financially and strategically. We are saddened to announce that our parent companies, Sony and Ericsson have decided to quit the joint venture and put its reinstatement on hold indefinitely.”
Yes, this is sad for the ordinary Sony Ericsson fan, but what might this mean for the regular consumer? Well, the obvious answer would be reduced variety on the mobile phone market and hence – a smaller choice of mobile phones. But the absence of a major competitor is sure to drive competition down amongst the other companies (albeit probably not considerably) and lead to an increase in prices and decrease in technological research and development, as the lack of pressure from a major competitor wouldn't provide incentives to do so. But probably, sometime in the future, a company might take up the empty spot Sony Ericsson is to leave – be it HTC, Apple or even Motorola.
