Well, it never hurts to begin with a pro-sumer camera like the FZ5. It isn't exactly a SLR or a semi-SLR persey, but it will give you enough options to keep you occupied for quite a while.
If you are looking for a simple point-and-shoot, and would like to begin fiddling with Aperatures, Shutter speeds and white-balance, the FZ5 is a good platform to step off of. The ability to see the picture before it's actually taken, with the electronic VFD or with the LCD on the back is just not an option on SLR's and that will give you more confidence when you begin adjusting the parameter (the only exception is the Olympus E-330, but then, it's in a totally different league).
If your friend is willing to part the Fz5 at a discount, and it is not in too shabby condition, then by all means knock yourself out. I was very pleased with my Fz20, the big brother to FZ5 and have taken some real great photos.
Once you have mastered using a prosumer camera, chances are, you'll start to crave for a SLR. Though, that's just my $0.02, I could have been really happy with a FZ30 or FZ50 or Fujifilm S9500 (which, by the way, is an excellent prosumer cam, albeit the ill-rated Super CCD). Though the lightning responses of a SLR and the sound of the mirror clicking away were too irresistable

For a beginner, the FZ5 will not disappoint.
