Think of the TV as a human body, and the burn-in protection, noise reduction, and other functions (such as the infamous PureCinema in older Pioneer PDP models) as "medicine"
A top quality TV, Pioneer PDP is supposed to be a very healthy body, and therefore don't need to take the medicine by default. If you take the medicine when you are healthy, there will actually be side effects (these video functions tweak or filter the input signals and as a result the output picture quality is usually less desirable than they supposed to be)!
So, why does Pioneer gives you these function?
Because the TV may get wrong treatment and become sick. In other words, if your input signal is highly infested by noise, you should then turn on the noise reduction function; if you like to stick with one cable channel which has a permenant logo watermark, you should then turn on the burn-in protection function.
In my case, my receive only digital signals for TV programs. While I play lots of video games which has lots of still icons, I found it very unlikely to get burn-in anyway. Therefore, I turn off all these "medicine" functions to ensure better picture quality.
In conclusion, don't take medicine unless you think the TV is, or will be, sick. In fact, if you think it is sick, these medicine should be the last solution on your list. -- you should try to improve the input signals, or to change the way you use it (watch more DVDs and less low-quality cable channels, ect.)
