Go ahead and google online and you will find tons of people are the same. I bought mine last year during the fall rebate and I paid less than $1800 USD for a brand new Canon 5D with full USA warranty (bought it from a very reputable store, so are a bunch of people online, search more in dpreview.com and you will find same stories all around.) This is one of the reasons people can buy cheap second hand 5D on eBay now because the original prices that sellers paid for are not high at all.
I will never say anything that I don't know or not in hand, and you gotta keep that in mind. The price is there, but people just don't know about it. It's how you buy the camera that matters.

PS#2: So far, the lowest priced 5D was on dell.com, and it was $16XX USD with all discounts/rebates applied during Thanksgiving period last year. Hundreds of Canon users on dpreview.com got the same deal there and you can go to the website and read their stories about the deal.

Come on~ Is that double rebate you were talking about? When you buy the body with additional lens or flash, accessories etc.? After the rebate THAT camera was $16xx plus additional stuff, you are not paid $16xx only.

Honestly How much did you pay for your 5D? I got my 5D with handle less than $2200 without any rebate from H.K.

Canon 5D is body only and there is no flash on board. Therefore, you'll have to buy a lens and a flash at least to get the camera working. FYI, for the rebate, you can buy a lens or a flash to fulfill the rebate, and it's easy like that. (when you can afford a 5D, buying a 430EX or a 50mm f/1.4 is like nothing, you just need 1 extra item to qualify for the rebate, and I don't see anything hard about it. If you don't need those things, just sell them after you got them; people in the USA do that very often. Selling photo equipments online is very quick; it's an easy thing to do within minutes. )

Just buy it at the end of Sep. or early Oct. Canon always have fall rebate going on every year. As of now it's the end of Aug. you just need to wait for a month (or less) to join the rebate.
With the rebates, I paid less than $1800 last year and I am not going to explain the details any further. The 5D has no flash and I had to buy a 580EX along with it anyway. So the rebate works perfectly for me as for other thousands of Canon users in the USA. The rebate was $600 and there were other stores/online discounts to bring down the total price. The bottom line is, it's easy to get a good price buying in the USA. The rebate thing is a cake and everyone is doing it every year.

You still don't get it, do you? You don't have to use ebay/paypal if you don't want to. There are other ways of selling equipments online for no extra charge. (newsgroup, craigslist, forum, FM,...)
I am not saying anything wrong, you can always buy it "in certain ways" to get below $2000 USD in 2006 (full year). Some ways are good, some are bad, some are easy to do, some required some work. It's how you buy and where you buy that matter the most. People in the USA are doing it a lot and we do get those good prices from stores, but sometimes we cannot share the stories explicitly. You will have to use google to dig out more info on those deals/ways of getting things at less cost.
PS: Stick with the dpreview forums. Lots of secret (and amazing) 5D deals are hidden within posts. You can always spare some time and learn from people on buying cameras. When you do see those deals, act quickly, because they don't last long.

You got your Cannon 5D less than $2,000 because you did all the hard work, such as search good deals online, rebates and leverage the price from the lens, BUT Cannon didn't mark the price down less than $2,000 at all. The street price for Cannon 5D is still $2,600 in 2007.
The price you got for your 5D is not everyday deal for unlimited quantity. Some items for good deals are each household per rebate in U.S.. I am sure that you know what I meant. I know you must be proud that you got your 5D for less than $2,000. I am very happy for you .
I got mine for $2,200 with handle from Hong Kong without all the hassles, but I don't dare to tell people that Cannon is selling 5D with handle for $2,200 in Hong Kong. Because I am not living in Hong Kong and not sure if the price is still valid. That's my point.
