Acutally k means kilo (khilioi); the way you mentioned is incorrect, you can check your hard disk for the meaning of k, which defined "1000 byte = 1KB"; if you disagree, sue your HD manufacturer.
k is a common used word in verbal communication, such as "two k ten to fifteen = 2010 - 2015", "is it possibel to get 3k per unit?".
By the way, "b" doesn't men byte, it means"bit", you have to use Capital "B" as representative of byte, not b.
