What's up with the LX3? New models in April?

Thanks to one of our readers for this find: In a discussion at the Amazon forums for the Panasonic LX3, one of the forum users there said that they were told by Panasonic that the LX3 was discontinued and new models were coming in April 2009.

Considering that Panasonic has been tweaking their product line-up and re-arranging model names, and the LX3K has been very hard to find almost throughout its product lifecycle, this rumor may not be far off.

Of course this is by no means a fact either - historically Panasonic has two major product announcement bursts, one early in the year (CES/PMA) and one in the summer (July), however in 2008 they had more "off-season" announcements. Plus they have already promised a high-definition version of the G1 and some new lenses for the first part of 2009. So there should be a PMA 2009 announcement from them for sure.

The big question is what will happen to the LX3? Considering its popularity since it became available for pre-order, why does it still have supply issues? Couldn't they make more to catch up? And will it be replaced by another LX-like camera(s), or will they "adjust" it for better or worse?

This goes without saying, but we'll repeat it, please treat this as a rumor, until or unless it is officially confirmed.

It turns out, there's also a busy dpreview thread with the same theme. Photographer told by Panasonic customer support that the camera is discontinued. Of course CSRs are not making official announcements for the company, and sometimes they know, sometimes they don't know what's going on.
