There is also no reason to reduce price because he says Taiwanese will pay them anyway.
So many on this tread is correct, market is part of the reason why the European cars are so expensive here, people don't mind paying the high price. And even if they mind, they still have the money to buy it.

Taiwan importer makes a lot. I have a friend work in Taiwan Mercedes .......
I wonder what is this so-called "Taiwan Mercedes" since I've never heard of this corporation!
If it's DaimlerChrysler Taiwan Ltd. you are referring to, then it makes better sense!
I also wonder how much % or amount per car the importer can make as profit as your friend
mentioned since none of us worked in DaimlerChrysler Taiwan Ltd. If he can reveal more
inside info, then it could be shocking/astonished to all of us!
Besides knowing the profits of car-importers in Taiwan, what else we can do? Would these
car-importers give a damn to us even we have already learned their % of profit?
If we import a Benz from Germany on our own, would ourselves achieve lower cost than
DaimlerChrysler Taiwan Ltd? If not, I don't see there is any reason for car-importers to
reduce prices since the advantage is on their side, right?
So, like I said ....... take it or leave it! (sigh..... what a cruel fact it is!)

DaimlerChrysler split, just in case you don't know. I said Taiwan Mercedes so it is easy for people to understand I am talking about Benz in Taiwan, not any other cars and in any other countries. It is a description. I guess I should have said "Changhwa Benz". Everyone know what that means. As for DaimlerChrysler Ltd., I bet most have no idea what kind of cars that company make.
Yes, TW dealer makes a lot, compare to say, Japan, Europe, and US. But we all know, it's not their profit that made the car expensive, taxes cost the biggest portion of it. But the cars could be cheaper, if the TW dealer decide to make less, but like you said, why would they want to do that? I wouldn't.
In the end, even if the dealer cut their profits (which they won't) the cars will still be way more than the prices in US, like you said, no point even arguing about this.
in Taiwan, there is NO capital taxes. people earn money from stock market or real estate, they don't pay taxes. i think it is unfair.
However, if they go to buy cars and other import goods, in a way, they are paying taxes. If a person buy a $3M car in Taiwan, he is likely pay $1M tax which make the whole tax system more reasonable.
because of the weak US dollars, the European cars are VERY cheap in the US. It is unbelievable!!. and when euro goes from 0.8 to 1.4, the BMW cars in the US are not even raise a bit!! if you calculate the options added each year, the car is ridiculously low in the US. I think it is unfair to compare US price to anywhere in the world, as i don't think BMW USA is making much money on the 3series cars in the US.

I am also sick on the Taiwanese tax system. However, I can not understand your logic. Because people do not pay capital tax, the other people should pay high tax on cars! Because the goose doesn't lay too much, the duck MUST lay more. Is that your logic?

think about this.. who are the people who buy expensive cars? especially those over $4M Taiwan Dollars? I think a good percentage of them gain money from stock market or real estate.
certainly, people don't pay tax on stock market gain... why not let them pay some tax on cars.
from your goose and duck example. in this case, those goose and ducks are the same group of people, (those people who didn't pay tax on capital gain but buy import cars) It is just they pay tax in different "names"
Of course, i don't like that... but who DARE to raise tax on Capital gain in Taiwan!!
actually, if you read the tax system. the import tax is not that great (around 20% i think) but the property tax is a lot more (around 30%) all cars will pay property tax. when people are attacking on import tax, they should force government to lower property tax on cars, too.
There is an new theory in taxing system in the US. The theory is NOT to tax on productivity tax. Instead, tax on consumption tax. What does it mean? It means, let's not tax on income, salary, capital gains at all... instead, tax on goods, like cars, houses, everyday goods...
the richer people will buy more things... thus pay more taxes. the poor people will buy less things, and pay less taxes. It is a new way of thinking and in theory, will make the underground economy disappear.
off topic, actually there are more things then just lower import tax in taiwan. used car market is a major issue. If government suddenly cut the import tax to 0%, the used car market will plump overnight, and that will create a lot of problems. (for ex, people finance their cars may stop paying, bank will get a lot of used car which can't sell at the price they want...ect..)
