Hoho.. There is no doubt 335i is faster than 540. But if u are talking about the E39 540 (4.4L 1997-2003), the official BMW number is about 5.9s(AT), 5.7s(MT) and real tested number is about 5.7s(AT) and 5.5(MT). I suspect the number you quote is E34 which is a 10-15 yr old car and even e39 540 is considered last generation compared to new 335 :-)
