Fifth-seeded Andy Roddick fell to 82nd-ranked Yen-Hsun Lu (right) of Taiwan in the fourth round at Wimbledon on Monday.
Lu defeated Roddick in five sets 4-6, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4), 6-7 (5), 9-7. It was the second-longest match of Wimbledon this year, lasting four hours, 36 minutes. Roddick lost in last year's classic 77-game Wimbledon final against Roger Federer.
With Roddick's loss, there are no American men remaining in the Wimbledon field. Roddick has now been stunned in both of his grass-court tournaments this season. He lost in the third round at Queen's Club to unseeded Dudi Sela earlier this month.
Roddick put the fate of the match in his serve, which was not broken until the 16th and final game of the fifth set.
In the 16th game, Roddick served an apparent ace at 30-30, which was successfully challenged by Lu. The replay overruled the serve, showing that the ball placement was outside the service box. Lu went on to win the next two points, breaking Roddick's serve for the first time. The 26-year-old then claimed the match after a grueling five sets.
Roddick was a gracious loser at his post-match press conference. He conveyed that his return game was not good enough to win the match. In response to how Lu beat him, Roddick said: "He was switching directions, keeping me off balance, not letting me get set." "Credit to him," Roddick said. "He played high risk, but he executed very well. He had a game plan, he stuck to it and he deserved to win more than I did, that's for sure."
