Dear all reader, please forgive me to write something in English.

Volvo is a safety first car. It has unique technology in city safe and others. Allow me to offer some comment about city safe and how this technology works and its limitation. Please forgive me if some of this may not be correct but it is based on my best engineering judgment and observation. I myself drive a Volvo V60.

City-safe (Standard version on all Volvo cars, I believe)

The technology used is not a very 'sophisticated' but it works. It primarily uses a technology called image compare and sensing. When the car speed is below 50km/h, the camera is activated. It captured the image and continous monitor that image. Before it does that, it immediately 'compare' with the data base to determine if any of the subject captured is a known vehicle. Within milliseconds, it can determine if this is the right target (through matching) Embedded in Volvo computer is over 50,000 sets of image profile where it determines if the detected image is a risk and if it is, when the distance or acceleration becomes too fast, it acted - brake hard! The most valuable asset of Volvo is this set of profile. Now, let's take a step back, the so called higher end version of city safet will consist more than 50,000 sets up to 150,000 where profile of human being, pets, motor cycles etc are build in. Again, by the same principle of operation, the computer now has more image to compare and therefore should provide a better coverage of protection. Having said that, let's not forget the power of software algorithm, I personally have come too fast to a parking exiti vending machine to drop my paid parking coin that the system detect that bar of obstruction and it acts! City Safe actually stopped my car abruptly! I based on my above theory on what is being said on Volvo catalog and the fact that standard version of V60 does not have a radar or detector at its front grille.

Please do not mixed up above with ACC. ACC is a totally different system. It is a more advanced system together with the camera system to provide a unique active cruise control system, that is adaptive.

In summary, Volvo system can be said is based on image capture and image determination. It is an engineering marvel that the camera does work in dark or rainy days and it seems to be quite reliable.

The incident in this post, is because running off the track and hit the safety island was never part of the image profile within the computer and therefore the system did not act. Let's not forget what was the speed the lady driver was driving, if it is above 50km/h, all system are off! (If the car turned off after hitting the sidewall, I can imagine there must be some forward momentum and speed going on!)

I am not writing above to promote Volvo. I am sharing what I think is working and again, there are more experts who can correct this for me, for my understanding. Personally, I think Volvo computer must be thinking I am a bad driver because I had more than 9 instances of city drive alert/action during my short 4 months of ownership!

We indeed live in a world of not just hardwares but rather softwares/firmwares combined with hardwares. It is very interesting and threating at times!
