昨天晚上我寫了一封 Email 給我以前的大學物理教授 (美國)o 那位教授曾是美國賓州大學物理研究院的教授, 退休後到我們大學來教書o 他在剛剛回信給我, 以專業來解惑對於 LHC 與 世界末日的關係o 信的人就信, 不信的人還是不信o 以下是原文:
"
Eric,
You ( and the rest of us) have nothing to worry about. The start up of the LHC is a very exciting event that many of us have been looking forward to for a while. There is no chance that it could cause any kind of global disaster. That particular situation – the production of black holes that destroy the earth – we know cannot happen. The necessary conditions for their production do not exist at the LHC. Just considering the total available energy of 10 TeV; a black hole this small can only survive about 1 zs. This is too short a time for it to come in contact with other matter and grow in mass.
It is true that we don’t know exactly what it will produce, but keep in mind that on the scale of the universe, this is a very small event. There are events happening many times a day all aver the universe that are many millions of times more energetic than anything that will happen at the LHC. There are cosmic ray protons with much more energy that the LHC protons that hit the earth’s atmosphere many times a day. These events do no damage to the earth or its people. This is not a time to be worried, but to be excited about what we are about to learn about the fundamental nature of the universe in which we live.
