Taiwan may be granted Schengen visa exemption by the end of this year. That's according to a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) familiar with the issue on Friday. MEP Simon Busuttil said his understanding is that the European Union will discuss the issue in June. The Maltese parliamentarian also said if nothing goes wrong, Taiwan could be granted Schengen visa exemption by the end of the year. Since early last year Taiwan has been bidding for Schengen visa exemption for its citizens. If granted the visa waiver, Taiwanese travelers will be able to travel visa-free to 25 European countries under the Schengen Agreement. The European Union had said earlier that Taiwan's bid would be passed before June. usuttil said the delay was not related to Taiwan's execution of four death row inmates in late April, which sparked condemnation from the EU.
