I believe Apple DOES NOT give customers the "brand new" iphone. Can't tell if it's a brand new phone by series number but you can figure out with model number. The question has been discussed, please see some links below.

Believe it or not. I've asked the employee who has confirmed my words.
I guess it's the fault they admitted. That's why I got a brand new one.
Anyway, It's still great even if it's refurbished cuz I have used the previous one for more than one year.
BTW, I knew how to identify a refurbished iPhone. I could lie to you, but I didn't.
