"The Adobe Creative Suite CS6 programs were released over 3 and a half years ago. The software development was completed prior to general availability of hiDPI (Apple marketing name “Retina”) displays for MacOS devices.
At the time of the CS6 release, applications such as Photoshop and Illustrator already had been significantly updated to use new MacOS APIs (application program interfaces) that supported HiDPI displays as well as provide 64-bit versions. These applications had CS6 timeframe updates in which the HiDPI support was readily added.
(Note that these new APIs finally eliminated legacy support for all pre MacOS 10.x versions which previously allowed us to support old and new OS versions as well as quickly migrate to MacOS 10 years ago!)
Unfortunately, at the time of the CS6 release, InDesign was in the process of being dramatically overhauled to use these new MacOS APIs and support 64-bit versions. Much of the code needed to be rewritten and quite frankly, InDesign is a much more complex piece of software than either Illustrator or Photoshop given its need to support text, vector, and images as well as complex, multiple thread-flow articles, etc. This overhaul which included HiDPI support was completed only in time for the CC release. The code changes could not simply be “retrofitted” into the CS6 version of InDesign other than by giving users of the CS6 version of InDesign a free copy of the CC version of InDesign when it was released (which in itself would have posed significant legal and accounting issues for Adobe).
During the CS6 lifetime, Adobe was very straightforward in communicating that neither HiDPI nor 64-bit support would be available in the CS6 version, but rather, that it would be available in the next major version of InDesign. As promised, that support was indeed made available in the next version of InDesign, labeled CC.
It should also be noted that although many Adobe users do have the CS6 programs fully operational under the latest MacOS versions (10.10.x and 10.11.x), CS6 is not officially supported on those, given that Apple does not guarantee that existing applications work on new OS versions.
We understand that you may not like the subscription model, but committing to a “recent” upgrade to CS6 from CS5.5 when Adobe has clearly indicated that there would not be any further updates to the CS6 software, that CS6 was effectively EOL (end of life), and without ascertaining that there was HiDPI support in the CS6 version of InDesign might not have been the most prudent strategy.
By the way, if you purchased an iMac even a day before Apple announced the hIDPI (Retina) versions, would you have expected Apple to retrofit your iMac for free?"
