The iPad 2 is being announced today and the media is ready and waiting to see the highly anticipated device in the flesh. However, if an Apple insider is to be believed, we're all going to be a little disappointed today and we should instead be holding out for iPad 3.
Earlier this year we heard rumblings that the iPad 2 would launch at the beginning of the year but that a third iteration of the device would launch in the fall. Today an Apple source is saying that the iPad 3 is what we should be excited about.
"For the iPad 2 don't get your hopes up too high. That's all I'm going to say," Cult of Mac quotes this Apple staffer as saying. "They've had a number of problems along the way, and the third-generation iPad is the one to make a song and a dance about."
It's thought that iPad 2 will incorporate minor changes to the original design, such as a slightly thinner body and the addition of a camera. However, an increasing number of rumors are suggesting that the third iteration will be a completely revamped version of the tablet.
Apple is set to announce iPad 2 at an event in San Francisco at 10 a.m. PST and the invite asks attendees to "Come see what 2011 will be the year of..." which could be Apple's coy way of saying we’ll see more than one iPad this year. Stay tuned and we'll keep you posted!
