so far, only Mercedes Bluetec can pass California emission laws. VW stop selling some diesel cars last year because they couldn't pass the regulations.
Diesel engine will emit 1. Black Smoke 2. NOx 3. SOx
1. Black smoke, mostly carbon. there are 2 ways to avoid black smoke. First, some cars re-use the exhaust air. As a result, the exhaust air will go into intake and "burn" again. Most of the carbon will be burned out in this "re-burn" process. However, there are still some carbon left. Then, use DPF to filter them all.
PS. If an engine DOESN"T re-burn the exhaust air and JUST use DPF to filter carbon, the DPF's life will be shorter. You will need to replace DPF when it's full. Engine which burn the exhaust again will have longer life DPF. sometimes you don't need to change for the life of the car.
2. NOx. This is a harmful gas, especially for infant and small child. The only way to get rid of NOx right now is Bluetec. It use another chemical to balance out the NOx gas. The Adblue need to be add regularly.
3. SOx. This is easy. just reduce the sulfur in diesel can get rid of SOx.
PS. Sulfur level has nothing to do with black smoke.

加州新法規對於 NOx、PM 排放量管制比現行更加嚴苛!沒記錯 , 似乎也比歐洲 EU5 來的苛 ...
PM 還算容易解決;環保署資料裡頭 , 有安裝 DPF ... 比沒有 DPF , 在 PM 排放方面可以減少十倍甚至更多
不過重點在於 NOx , 有 Mercedes-Benz、Volkswagen 幾家車廠合作開發新技術
目前總共有 NOx 儲存觸媒轉化器、SCR 選擇性還原觸媒轉化器 ... 甚至還有啥尿素水注入裝置
Antus 兄提到的 AdBlue 就有使用尿素水注入裝置 , 必須定期補充 ... 沒記錯這好像主要用於較大型車
實車部份的話 ... E320 Bluetec、GL420 Bluetec 就是例子
不過我想 , VAG 使用 3.0 TDI、4.2 TDI、6.0 TDI 這些引擎的車款 , 再加上 NOx、SCR ... 應該很快也能過關
