ALL VW group 1.4 TSI engined vehicles - Volkswagen TSI Engines - zango There is nothing fundamentally wrong with small capacity engines with forced induction and/or direct injection replacing larger capacity normally aspirated engines.
Judging by the proliferation of these technolgies by virtually all manufacturers there is clearly a benefit in terms of performance, emissions and fuel consumption.
Mr Gordini was right!
My own experience of the Golf TSI 1.4 160 engine was that this was a batch problem with engines dating from early 2009. In hindsight this sounded to me exactly like "piston slap" at start up, which we know will sooner or later result in engine failure. The issue in my mind is that VW did not recall this batch of engines but waited for them to fail.
