How would Japanese react if a female named "Yotaka" were introduced to them? I want to know whether "Yotaka" is suitable to use as a female name in Japan.
Yotaka (night hawk) is a euphemism for a lady of the night who is not under the protection of a brothel, who had to entertain guests outside, in the woods or by a river. It’s an Edo period term not well known today but probably not a good name for a girl.
Yotaka sounds dangerously close to “Yutaka” which is a common boy’s name. I cant imagine any girl in Japan calling herself Yotaka, but I’ve been wrong before. Sounds like some made-up name from a manga or anime. Takayo, might work as a girl’s name.
