A Cautionary Tale when using certain USB devices on Surface 3 [potential for stuck plugs] (self.Surface)
submitted 4 月前 * by Timmyc62Surface 3 4GB | Lumia 930
Certain USB device plugs, such as the nano receiver for my wireless mouse, has two square holes on the narrow sides of the plug. These two holes will catch onto the metal "bumps" on the inside of the Surface 3's USB port, making it extremely difficult to remove. Attempts to remove it by force nearly caused the plastic on the receiver to separate from the metal portion, and success would not have been guaranteed: as you can see from the black area I highlighted with the small red oval, the "bumps" appear to be more like tabs that have the open end facing towards the back of the port. That means when you try to remove the USB receiver, those tabs will slip into the square holes on the receiver, preventing its removal.
I ended up sliding a pair of very thin plastic sheets cut to size in the gaps on either side of the receiver to push the port's tabs back up and out of the receiver's holes in order to get it removed.
This isn't a problem specific to the Surface, but it is one to watch out for if you have certain USB accessories that have those extra holes and you plan on using them with the Surface.
Edit: the plastic sheets I used were the 0.13mm thick stock made by Evergreen Scale Models. You may be able to find them at your local model/hobby shop.
