Barbaric Metal
Many famous investors such as Warren Buffet refer to gold as a “Barbaric metal.”
The question is, “Why do these experts call gold ‘barbaric?’”

“Barbarians” loved gold

One reason why gold is considered barbaric is because it’s been money for thousands of years. Famous “barbarians” such as Genghis Khan, Attila the Hun, Caesar, and Hitler valued Gold and silver.

I’m currently sitting in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, waiting for a flight to Seoul, Korea. Today, the Mongolian Stock Exchange is the fastest growing exchange in the world. Arriving in UB, as they call Ulaanbaatar for short, I can see why.

UB is booming. Mining companies from all over the world are here looking for gold and other barbaric metals. There are construction cranes everywhere. I just hope these cranes aren’t the beginning of the end. Every time I see construction cranes sitting on high-rise buildings, I don’t see birds of paradise—I see the birds of prey, meaning the boom is over.

UB is the land of the great Mongolian Khans, a father-and-son team of world-famous barbarians who traded in gold and silver.

So, according to today’s highly-educated experts, gold is barbaric because barbarians valued gold. Today, modern barbarians—mining companies—still value gold.

In 1996, my partners and I sent mining engineers and geologists into China, Mongolia, and Peru looking for gold mines. Back in 1996 the price of gold was at an all time low, and gold mines were cheap.

We found a massive potential gold deposit in China, purchased it from the Chinese government for nothing down, and took it public through an IPO in 2004 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The find turned out to be the biggest gold deposit found in Chinese history. The problem is that the Chinese government liked our discovery. Today, they’re in the process of legally taking the mine from us and paying us nothing. Talk about barbarians.

No intrinsic value

The second reason why so-called experts label gold barbaric is because they believe it has no “intrinsic value.” If you follow Warren Buffet, the words “intrinsic value” may be the two most important words to him.

The experts say gold has no intrinsic value because no one really uses gold. Also, gold has no intrinsic value because it pays no interest. Silver, on the other hand, has intrinsic value because it’s used as an industrial metal. And shares of McDonald’s have intrinsic value because people eat “Big Macs.” For most people, gold is just gold, an expensive piece of metal that they wear or hide in safe places.

So, these are some of the reasons why in the past experts didn’t like gold and haven’t recommended gold—until the price of gold got exp! ensive that is. Now everyone is talking about gold. A few weeks ago, even Jim Cramer recommended investors have a little gold in their portfolio. To me, his recommendation was a little late, like a-thousand-dollars-an-ounce too late.

Trust is a valuable commodity
To me, gold’s intrinsic value is the value of “trust.” People trust gold and have trusted gold for thousands of years. In today’s world of global incompetence, “trust” is a valuable commodity.
Take a moment to think about how valuable “trust” is to you. Think about people you trust. What is that trust worth?

Take moment to think about people you don’t trust. Who are they? Why don’t you trust them? And what is that lack of the trust worth? Would you do business with them, if you didn’t trust them? Do you trust your boss to guide the company you work for? Do you trust your partners not to stab you in the back for a few dollars?
The real question is, “What is trust worth?” Does trust have any value to you? Trust ha! s no value to many people, especially people who will screw others for a few dollars.

Trust is essential to human interaction. I find it interesting that the very people that screwed the economy are the same people calling gold a “barbaric metal” without “intrinsic value.” Who are the real barbarians?

In Europe today, most EU members do not trust each other. Northern European countries do not trust Southern European countries such as Greece, Italy, and Spain to cut spending, reduce wages and benefits, and increase production. If this trust issue isn’t resolved, the European Union may collapse.

In the US, voters don’t trust our leaders to solve our countries financial problems. China is losing trust in the US to pay its bills. This lack of trust is spreading across Asia.

Europe’s problems must be solved today. The biggest US problems are ten years out, problems such as Medicare and Social Security. Many retirees and future retirees are wondering if they can trust our leaders to save their retirement.

If the lack of trust continues, the price of gold will only go up. If trust is regained, then the price of gold will come back down…but I’m not holding my breath. I’d rather hold gold.

My trust is in the barbaric metal, because “trust” is an “intrinsic value” that is missing in today’s economy.
