the 3rd time when the HD died, Apple replace it with Hitachi 7K100. i think it is better.
Seagate is faster in read/write single big file (for ex, 1G Video file) Hitachi is faster in writing many smaller files, (for ex, boot up, or copy 1000 pictures at 1MB each)
noise it about the same, (at least i don't find any difference in my powerbook)
unless u Have to use 7200 rpm drive. i think the newer 160G 5400rpm is a better choice. (or 250G 5400 rpm HD)
on the newer 160 5400rpm hd, the speed is almost the same as old 7200rpm 100G. however, use about 2/3 of the power only, and you get a bigger HD for the same price.
and btw, Hitachi 5K160 is a better choice than Seagate 5400.2 160G in IDE. (if you go SATA, it's the other way around)
Transfer Rate Mini 4.2 MB/sec Max 30.9 MB/sec Average 26.6 MB/sec
Access Time 17.1 ms Burst Rate 68.2 MB/sec
Hitachi 7k80 or Seagate Momentus 7200.1
Hitachi 7k80 (nt2999) Seagate Momentus 7200.1 (nt3079)
Hitachi or Seagate?

yes, on IDE, Hitachi 7K100 is faster than Seagate 7200.1 100G IDE. the difference is about 5-10%
especially the IDE Seagate died on me twice in my PowerBook, i think 7K100 is a better choice between the 2.
when compare between 7K100, 5400.3 160G, and 5K160 160G.
If you are talking about absolute speed, 7K100 is still the fastest between these 3, but the difference is small, maybe like 5% (depends on application) Personally, if the performance and price so close, i will take bigger drive. (both about the same price, ie, 7k100 vs. 5k160)
160G in reality has double the capacity of 100G. why? if system software takes 30G, you have "usable" space of 130G to 70G.
on ur M50, i think upgrade is not necessary if you want speed. if you want space, get the biggest one u can find on IDE. (currently 5k160 or WD 250G 5400rpm)
