MBP 2.16G C2D 3G ram,
A. ram

Really interesting. What I knew was QuickTime 7.6 more compatible with AVC high profile finallly.
Can you try a simple clip from Apple Movie Trailer?
Everlasting Moments
Please select 1080P as testing base.
This movie trailer is Main@L4.0, 9.5Mbps and 23.98fps clip. If you put this clip under PowerDVD and enabling DXVA on a nVidia 8000 (or above) machine, the CPU utilization shall be as low as 5~10%. On my Core Duo 1.83GHz Macbook Pro and OS X+QuickTime 7.6, the CPU utilization was 30~50%.
What about yours? Thanks.

30-50% here also.
After a little testing, I found that it seems like the GPU only does decoding for some AVC files. Trailers like The Soloist, The International clip and Inglorious Basterds can be played using QT 7.6 using less than 13% CPU time. But trailers like Everlasting Moments, Planet 51 and Night at the Museum 2 takes 30-50% CPU time. Their differences in resolution and bit-rate are negligible.
So I guess it has something to do with the profile and level.
