i have a WD 320G My Passport essential, works great on my desktop (wondiws) and notebook (apple)
besides, you need a "good" USB cable, too. some usb cable are not 2.0 certified and believe me, it DOES make a difference. (i have 5 usb cable, all 5 are usb 2.0, but only 2 can use it on powered HD without problem)

buy external HD from WD, Seagate, or Hitachi. you should have no problem
your experience and info are greatly appreciated. thx.
I will have new one as your suggestion.
my 2.5" hdd power consumption is 5v 600mA
how about yours.
I also hope to know what is lowest power consumption for 2.5" hdd.
on WD HD, there is a jumper that can "lower power requirement during spin up) which will slowing up spin up time and lower power consumption. On the WD My Passport, that's the default setting.
also look into the cable, some so called "usb 2.0" cable just not good enough for Data + power transfer. (Data usually ok, but not Data+Power, especially those come with Digital Camera and 3.5inch HD. because those two cases, the USB cable don't need to transfer power)
