"This would be a serious issue if it happened in a real crash, but it's not likely to happen and it's fixable," Lund explains. "Still, belts shouldn't come loose in a crash test. Volvo is fixing the problem so it won't be an issue with XC60 models produced after November 2009. Top Safety Pick applies only to these modified XC60s."
Consumers who own 2010 XC60s already on the road should see their Volvo dealer for repairs, Lund advises.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has conducted a side impact crash test on the Volvo XC60 MY 2010 for their upcoming ratings presentation in November (top safety picks etc). During the test of the XC60 the seat belt was released from the fixing point on the driver seat's left hand side. After thorough investigations Volvo can conclude the crash test result was caused by the plastic ribs inside the driver seat side cover panel. During impact, the ribs may strike the seat belt release button which causes the belt to release. There are no previous incident reports or customer complaints, neither at Volvo nor at IIHS and NHTSA.
At Volvo Cars we take this seriously and have therefore decided to conduct a recall campaign on 9 667 XC60 MY 2010 with US/Canada specification on markets were these cars are sold.
Statement
• During a left side impact crash test at IIHS the safety belt on a XC60 was released at the fixing point on the driver's seat.
• To the best of our knowledge this has never happened on the roads or in any of our crash tests. Volvo does not have any field reports or records from about 50 side impact crash tests conducted at VCC during the development of the XC60.
• However, since safety is at the core of Volvo's brand and we take this single crash test result very seriously we have decided to recall the XC60 MY 2010. After thorough investigations Volvo has come to the conclusion that the corrective action is to remove the plastic ribs inside the plastic cover on the left side of the driver seat (protecting the side of the seat) which have caused the situation.
• This action only concerns the driver's seat on cars with a US/Canada specification.
• There are different technical solutions and specifications on seats and models depending which market the cars are aiming for. Therefore are not all sold XC60 cars included in this recall.
Q: Can this happen to any other Volvo car model with another specification than US/Canada?
A: The vehicle that failed the IIHS test was conducted with a US market vehicle with a unique design of the seat belt. However, we will analyse all our different models and specifications in order to find out if there is any risk that this can occur.
也就是說只有北美規格的車才會受影響,因為它們的安全帶機構與歐規有所不同,當然,除非是平行輸入車那就另當別論。
