i guess the tough part will be u ( as well as ur friends helping u) packing up ur stuff and bring them to the cargo shipment company who will do the rest of it for u....
as of the declearation of goods.... just put down whatever u can think of...
such as " personal belongings.... books... electronic.".. stuff like that.
of couse...u gonna pay up b4 u go...
not reali moving rite at this moment, but i am just preparing and planning for the coming move end of this year. Anyhow, I already gave up using any possible shipments after realizing da costs beyond my estimation. My situaion is better off since still having plenty of time to sell off the burden. As Paul and matrc hve provided you some alternatives, don get hasty, and take some time to deccide wot goes and wot abandons. matrc is rite about cargo shipment, not dat complicated but such a saving method. Just so when is your departure ? the more time you have, the better ways you might be able to think of. I once did help a friend of mine to make his move back home to tw by carring his extra luggages totalled 128kg, dat otherwise would have been a rip-off charge. In case if you cant get any better deal, jsut selling the canoe ( must be your precious~) and asking "free hand-carrying" from whoever around you.
Just curious, cant you get dat canoe anywhere in tw ? Or it's just has been a good companion for you all the way ? hummmm....... And if you can get your data backup, it's okay to sell off the PCs, which are quite cheap in tw, or think this way, it's time to get new stuff ~~ btw, if everone's cargo plan goes safe and sound, I might consider doing so , and my "precious" can tag along with me.
To: mtrac & paul
How did (do) initially get the contacts with the cargo firm ? And would they charge differently among different firms ? How to determine whether the goods are taxable or not ? Can I go to the port to pick up the stuff after its arrival so saving the second delivery charge ? Thx for providing information so my stuff can go with me ~

i intitally went to that cargo company while my friend was shipping his beloved MX3 back to taiwan couple yrs ago. but when i was moving back to taiwan. i already lost the info on this cargo company...so i did look around and ask around on the chinese yellow page as well as on the chinese newspaper. i didn't realize i would end up the same company until i got there... well...
i was under the impression that as long as goods are considered as personal used belongings, it should be tax-free.... but u never know until goods are arrived at Keelong (or Kaoshung)port where the custom will randomly inpect to determine whethere are taxable or not... of couse u can save some money on delivery charge by going there yourself to pick it up your cargo.. but i was told if ur goods are there for some time, they will charge u some storage fee...loh...
If you need information on cargo consolidators in New York area, please PM me, and I will refer you to some of my good friends.
Some Taiwanese shipping lines provide discount for graduating students within last six month for moving back to Taiwan - not sure if there is still such discount.
mtrac - people sometimes complain to us in shipping business about various surcharges here and there. But again these are "pass-though" charges so we hate these surcharges as much as customers do. Unfortunately shipping is an "ancient" industry and there are a lot of things we wish we can change but cannot.
By the way, what's with the "intentionally" mis-spelled words I see here... For example, "da" in place of "the" and "wot" in place of "what"... This is no better than using "注音文" in the posting... I really don't mind the "ppl", "u", or "ur" but come on! We are well educated Taiwanese here... Sorry I had to vent a little bit.

i realize people love to complain when they are asked to hand out their money out of their pocket.... as of for me, i didn't think pervious posts that i had posted have (if) in any other ways complained nor insulted the cargo/consolidator shipping industries... we are here simply to contribute our experiences to help out others.... sorry if there is any misunderstandings~
yeah~ we are all educated people here... but sometime i am just being lazy

and I am so sorry for the inconvenience caused by inadequate abbreviations.
I got your point, however, "注音文" ain't more like typing "KK phonetic alphabet" ? And the proposition of using abbreviation is not nenessary equal to uneducated ? I am not saying you are wrong by giving reminder to us. It's the logic is hard to follow. I reckon your point is to boost the readability for general visitors right. Since most of forums are using abbreviation regardless the education-levels, it has nothing to do with uneducated.
Pass-through period means the price index doesn't adjust to exchange rate fluctuation accordingly in the short term? And as moe trades/contracts are signed, it's going to restore to its equilibrium ? So there comes the surcharge ? Or simply it's caused by tariff or taxiation differential ? Please exaplain to me at this point. What is the percentage of surcharge normally ? Thanks a lot.
ps. i guess I very much desire to learn more about shipping business~
Paul, I did ask the local cargo shipment informaiton. Currently, they will charge me at 1m * 1M * ~0.85m for 80 dollars, it is not including the import and export tax. The dealers said the shipping may take 45 to 50 days and they have to do some document paper work at the customs house.
To wazup, you are right. In fact, I did sell the canoe on this Sunday with millions of reluctance. I bought it used and at 300, now selling it for 100. It is not about the price, it is about that period of memory. I know it is just "stuff" old and lots of scratchesand I should not involve too much "emotion." When seeing his(not "her" because I think it is my buddy) scars at the last glance, those things reminded me how to controll him, how I dropped into the cold lake, and lying it to see the night sky with simple tuna sandwich. Uh....I should return to the reality world. BTW, the new owner said "I will take of HER" The canoe in my mind is male:(
To mtrac, thanks for your encourageing. Not only will I be poor, but I may also be a real street wander after moving my apartment.
To Cheng_Kenichi, I appreciate your offering me the related information and help. I will try to contact with you as soon as possible.
To zzzghost, sorry about not writting the Chinese. Usually, I am using the publich computer. the advantage to me is not let myself worry about the virus attack or affect. The other reason is ......I don't have chinese "brushed" keyboard, and am tired of "hitting" the on-Screen keyboard to find the correct and correlative characters inputs. If trying to have a complete context, I may need to write down a draft, or forget what to write or mean.
OK...please forgive my last blah blah blah. I promise it is the last.
I canceled "Road-Runner" cable modem service on impulse. Few far weeks...s ago, the modem shomehow had malfunction problems. I contacted the local service and the receptionist made an arrangement to exchange the modem. I had waited for the scheduled day for whole day, but there was none to come my place to exchange it. I called the Customer service to make the complain and they had nothing to make up the mistake they made. Well, I thought myself it's not a big deal. I still can go on campus to use the Internet. The next day a TimeWanner whatever guy gave me a call to mention about how sorry they are and blah blah blah... He gave me a deal about offering full channel cable TV and cable modem combo for 58 USD per month. Unfortunately, I did not take the deal.
OK, one more thing. Because of returning Taiwan, I have to learn how to make a moving sale and think about the Cargo shipment. For those guys still in USA, take my advice not to buy the "huge" stuff or things. I know some of you diving here and already have things like piano, ATV, and a whole set of cumpter furniture. It won't be easy as we thought that way:)
P.S. Who will allow me to sleep on the floor in your apartment? I need to rename myself to change "gdan" in to "gwander" sigh~~~~~~~~~~
