I think Tesla is trying to reduce the amount of energy stored in every possible way they can. They reduced charge speeds because it puts lots of energy into the battery quickly and produces a lot of heat. They removed battery preheating because it adds energy to batteries. They capped voltage and permanently gimped the battery's maximum energy capacity. They lowered regen to reduce more energy and heat input. They run cooling pumps all of the time to reduce thermal energy AND decrease stored energy at the same time.
Tesla OTA last year crippled 85 charging. In addition to slower supercharging, the car will continuously run the coolant pumps for HOURS and, in some cases the fans, anytime you charge over 80%. So if you charge to 100 and don't immediately drive, the pump/fan will bleed off that charge. I experimented with this a bit when it happened and changed my daily charging to 75% instead of the usual 80 to save all this wear/tear on the pumps/fans. Also it just was generally annoying to have the car sitting in the garage whirring away for no damn reason other than Tesla trying to avoid warranty claims the battery pack. It is this dark side of OTA and Tesla's handling of disclosing whatever is going on with the 85 packs that has my plans on another Tesla purchase on indefinite hold. They already lost one sale to Subaru. Still waiting to see how many more purchases I make elsewhere... while they pretend nothing is wrong.
Good question. Unfortunately Tesla won't tell us. There are a lot of theories and speculation (some of it pretty wild), along with a lot of apologists.. but the bottom line is that it absolutely changed May 2019 and every 85 will do this, some sooner than others and some more severely. Tesla doesn't write "personal" updates, so all 85s are carrying the same code (duh). I babied my battery and I still noticed the change. I'm think I'm pretty objective about the company despite a significant stock holding, 6+ years of ownership and blogging history that includes writing for Teslarati (years ago)-- but this is definitely fishy, annoying and an undisclosed change to my car that I'm still rather patiently hopping Tesla will come clean about. But it is most definitely "a thing" you can easily search TMC for additional info and reports.
